I actually visited a Keen store the other day to try on a different pair of boots – and on a whim – tried these on in brown as well (the store didn’t have black, so I wound up buying the black for a substantially better price here on Amazon – sorry Keen!) and LOVED them. I was originally looking at the Silverton boot because I didn’t think this boot was going to zip over my gigantic hiking calves. Turns out, they BOTH fit, just about perfectly. I liked the styling on this boot substantially more, too.
What do I love about this boot? First of all? Waterproof. I live in Portland, OR and I walk around the city a LOT – so having a boot I can wear, regardless of weather, is awesome. I have another pair of black leather knee-high boots, but they have heels, and I really wanted a flat pair for more daily use – and these TOTALLY fit that bill! They’re Keens, so they’re very comfortable, and wide enough for my feet, too. I LOVE the more rugged sole of these, which will come in handy when confronted with wet leaves or mud. I have a very high in-step, and these STILL go on my feet and don’t rub the tops of my feet the wrong way.
I will say, the ankle of the boot is oddly…roomy. Almost…slouchy? They’re perfect to wear over a pair of skinny jeans with the bottoms cuffed – but really – the ankle is nearly as wide as the top of the boot. (Cankles? Yeah, you’re covered.)
I wear anywhere from an 8.5 to 9 depending on the shoe, and though most of my Keens are an 8.5, I did have to go with a 9. The 8.5 was snug in a weird way – if you’re between sizes, I’d say go up the half size (or go try them on at a store to confirm!). Overall, these are just what I needed – flat, black, nice enough to wear out to dinner (well, in the PNW anyway), and casual enough for daily wear. I predict I beat the crap out of these boots in the next few years!
i was pretty disappointed in the fit of this boot, it was much more roomy and loose around the ankle than what i anticipated. It felt like i was wearing gumboots. I took the advice of the keen website on sizing and went up half a size, but this also made it too big. I had to return the boots sadly, ugh, all the was from New Zealand! ha ha, a lesson learned I guess.
I first purchased this boot about 5 years ago (virtually the same but a shorter model) and only had to replace them last year. That is 4 years of regular use, especially in the winter months. They are extremely comfortable, warm, and will keep your feet happy and dry. Love em!
I tried to look at every review i could find before deciding on getting this boot and no-one mentioned that it runs small! which is why I stayed away from the Silverton. My foot measures 27cm and I usually go for a US11, EU 42 or an AU11 (for instance sorell boots fit perfectly). But in this boot I would need a size 12 even though the label says 28cm (i thought i’d be swimming in it..but no), the size is slightly better without the removable sole in but then its just really hard on the foot and thats not what I got a Keen shoe for… I want comfort.
On other features, the color is nice (potting soil/shitake), the leather is quite scratched looking but maybe thats just the rugged style.
It is durable looking and waterproof looking.
This is/was my first pair of Keen shoes so maybe i’m missing the point or is there a special way to wear them? For me being able to wear them right out of the box is essential and sadly this pair of boots would not allow for that.
Another issue I had is that the removable insole was all scrunched up on one of the shoes and trying to get it to sit flat was impossible so its a uncomfortable under the foot when walking.
So I gave it 3 stars because it is just that- ok. not great, not terrible and in the end not for me.
Make no mistake: there is nothing dainty about these boots. These are massive, COMFORTABLE clodhopping BOOTS. They are big, roomy, built for wide feet and large calves, and you can stand or walk around in them all day. They are thick, durable leather, and I fully expect them to still be my go-to winter shoe in 10 years time. Let’s face it, I’m a mom of small children and I don’t have the disposable cash or time to be a slave of fashion. I like practical, comfortable and benign enough to withstand the fickleness of the fashion industry.
This boot has the potential to be comfortable. But, the slouchiness in the ankle rubs on the top of my foot. This is really uncomfortable and with a lot of walking will be pretty bad. I did like the boot but didn’t work for me. Maybe for a wider foot and someone with thicker ankles and legs this would be perfect. Seems really durable.
I’m surprised to see all the reviewers who thought these ran small, my experience was the opposite. I have a wider foot, and usually wear a 7, except in Keens and occasionally other brands with a wider toe box, and then a 6-/12 fits better. I ordered them in a 7 and they were way too big, so I sent them back for 6-1/2s. There was still plenty of room, enough for thicker socks. I could probably even have fit in a 6, but I didn’t want to send them back again, and was also afraid that the smaller size might be too tight in the calves. I have more athletic calves, and these just fit over skinny jeans. If you’ve got thin calves these are probably not the boots for you. They are a fairly clunky style, but they’re super comfy, and I think they’re cute. I already had some casual boots in black, so I bought the shitake.
